In what would appear to be yet another transfer calamity from former Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu, Suarez has now confirmed the Camp Nou outfit were given glowing references regarding Darwin Nunez well in advance of his exploits at Benfica.

Nunez, 22, first moved to Europe with LaLiga 2 side Almería in 2019 for just £4.5 million. One season and 16 goals later Nunez would move to Benfica for £20 million.

“I recommended Darwin to Barcelona when he was at Almeria. I have 15 years of international experience. I know a thing or two about forwards.”

“And I told them, ‘Pay attention to this one, he’s very good, he shows interesting things.” Suarez told journalist Gerard Romero on Twitch.”

“They told me when he was in Almeria that he was too young. But, instead of now paying €80m, €90m or €100m, they would have paid €15m or €20m” Suarez continued.

Suarez’s thoughts on Nunez were proved right – after two hugely successful seasons at Benfica, Nunez completed his £85 million move to Liverpool this week.

Nunez’s arrival at Liverpool now all but confirms the exit of Sadio Mane who is being strongly linked with German side Bayern Munich.
