Walter Sabatini has shockingly resigned from his role with Salernitana just weeks after securing their dramatic Serie A survival.

Reports from Italy suggest the Salerno-based sides’ new President, Daniele Iervolino, and Sabatini have clashed over paying agents’ unreasonable commissions. The fallout has escalated quickly, with Sabatini unhappy at the limitations affecting an already meager summer transfer budget.

Serie A legend Sabatini is a renowned sporting director with an impressive body of work. His C.V includes stints at Palermo, Inter, Roma, Lazio, Sampdoria, Bologna Montreal Impact. His genius in the transfer market and operational knowhow is without doubt the reason for Salernitana‘s survival last season.

Arriving only in January, Sabatini joined the club following Iervolino’s Salernitana acquisition from Lazio chief Claudio Lotito. The appointment was inspired and completely changed the fortunes of the club. Taking the club from bottom of the table and 6 points adrift, to final day drama and survival in the closing minutes of the season.

Sabatini’s exit has dampened all end of season optimism surrounding the project, with coach Davide Nicola and number of senior players now evaluating their positions. Daniele Iervolino next appointment will be pivotal, and a potential poisoned chalice for his predecessor.
