  • Reims are holding out for an improved fee for the striker after previously accepting Newcastle’s £25 million offer

Newcastle has re-started negotiations with French side Reims for wonderkid Hugo Ekitike after failing to land the striker in January.

Ekitike enjoyed an impressive breakout season with Reims last season, scoring 10 goals in 23 Ligue 1 appearances.

Newcastle’s January move for the striker came too soon for the youngster, with the player insistent on completing his first professional season in France. There appears to be confidence on both sides that the deal can now be resurrected, especially with Newcastle’s Premier League status confirmed for the coming season.

A fee worth around £25 million was originally agreed between the two sides in January. Reims are now pushing for a package closer to £40 million given the youngsters impressive form.

Newcastle will be looking to invest heavily this summer with a host of players being linked with moves to Tyneside. Fellow Frenchman Moussa Diaby is a serious target, whilst Watford’s Ismaila Sarr is also of interest following Watford’s relegation.
