Asencio’s initial priority was to remain in Madrid and sign a new agreement, although negotiations have stalled due to the players salary demands.

The Mallorcan and his agent Jorge Mendes have been pushing for a pay rise on his current £138,000 weekly salary, requesting Madrid match the offers made from overseas clubs. With Asencio unlikely to be starter for the coming season, Madrid is now inviting bids around the £40 million mark.

AC Milan holds a long-standing interest in the player, although his contractual demands could push the player towards a move to the Premier League with Newcastle United , Arsenal and Manchester United all waiting on a response from the player.

RedBird Capital will be looking to announce their arrival in Serie A with a marquee signing this summer, although not at any cost. Asensio’s £8 million annual package demands would shatter their tightly controlled wage structure, mindful Rafael Leão would expect parity with the clubs’ top earners. His extension this summer is viewed as a key priority.

Further meetings between Madrid and Mendes are now scheduled for next week to thrash out Ascenio’s future.
