  • Serbian defensive midfielder Matic set to sign for his seventh professional club
  • The player leaves United on a free transfer having spent 5 years in Manchester following his move from Chelsea
  • Matic will be reuniting with Jose Mourinho for the third time at his current club AS Roma

Nemanja Matic is set to sign with AS Roma on a free transfer, and reunite with manager Jose Mourinho for a third time.

Matic, 33, will be leaving Manchester United at the end of June as a free agent after spending 5 years in the North West. He’ll be leaving to join the same manager that brought him to Old Trafford from Chelsea back in 2017.

Reports from Italy are confirming Matic has already agreed a one-year deal with Roma, with an option for a further year depending on appearances.

Following Matic’s announcement he’d be leaving Manchester United in May Mourinho remained coy on links to the player.

He stated: “Everyone knows my relationship with Nemanja. He’s one of the guys with my trust. We won together, we fought together – in United too.”

He’s a fantastic player, but that’s a kind of answer that is not good for me or for the player.”

The Serbian will find some familiar faces in Rome with a number of ex-Premier League players now plying their trade in Serie A.

Former Wolves’ goalkeeper Rui Patricio, Tammy Abraham, and former teammate Chris Smalling are all established first team players at the Giallorossi, whilst current team-mate and free agent Jesse Lingard is reported to be also mulling over a move to the capital.
